Mounting a TV looks like one of the easier homeowner projects.
You find the spot, hold the bracket against the wall, drill a few holes, tighten the bolts, and hang the TV.
The problem is that drywall hides everything you do not want to hit.
Behind that clean wall could be electrical wiring, a water line, a drainpipe, metal protection plates, HVAC ductwork, or absolutely nothing strong enough to support the mount. One wrong hole can turn a simple Saturday project into a call to an electrician, a plumber, and somebody who repairs drywall.
That does not mean you should be afraid to mount your own TV. It means you should slow down and check the wall before pulling the trigger on the drill.

What Could Be Hiding Behind the Wall?
Most people are worried about missing the stud. That matters because a heavy TV, especially one on a full-motion mount, needs the correct structural support.
But the stud is not the only thing inside the wall.
Electrical cables may run from nearby outlets or switches. Plumbing may be present if the wall backs up to a bathroom, kitchen, laundry room, or mechanical area. A vent or duct may pass through the cavity. Metal plates may also cover wires or pipes where they run close to the face of a stud.
If your drill suddenly hits metal, do not push harder. Stop.
That metal may be there specifically to keep your screw away from something important.
1. Start With a Reliable Stud Finder
The first tool I would use is a stud finder that shows more than one tiny center mark.

Scan the wall slowly in both directions. Do it more than once. Mark the left and right edges of the stud, then mark the center.

You may be picking up blocking, two studs placed together, metal, a pipe, or another change inside the wall.
Also remember that a stud finder is not an X-ray machine. It may not detect every wire, pipe, or hidden object.
Use the reading as one part of the process, not as permission to drill anywhere the warning lights stay off.
2. Check the Electrical Area
A non-contact voltage tester is another smart tool to keep around the house.

If you are drilling near an outlet or switch, shut off the appropriate circuit when practical and verify that the power is off.
You should also be cautious about drilling directly above, below, or beside electrical devices. Wiring often travels from those locations into the surrounding wall.
When you are not sure, an electrician is cheaper than finding the wire with a drill bit.
3. Look Inside When the Wall Does Not Make Sense
Sometimes the stud finder gives inconsistent readings. Sometimes the wall backs up to plumbing. Sometimes you are working on an older house where previous owners clearly made decisions after saying, “This should probably work.”

4. Measure the TV, Not Just the Wall
A television can be perfectly secured and still look terrible because it is too high, too low, or not centered with the furniture.

Before drilling, measure the television, the wall bracket, the furniture below it, nearby outlets, and the mounting-hole pattern on the back of the TV.
Do not assume the center of the bracket will be the center of the screen. Depending on the television and its mounting pattern, the screen may sit higher or lower than expected after it is attached.
One easy trick is to use painter’s tape to outline the television on the wall.
Then sit down on the couch and look at it.
That five-minute test can prevent the classic mistake of mounting the TV near the ceiling because it looked fine while you were standing up.
5. Make Sure the Mount Is Actually Level
Eyeballing it works until you sit down and notice the screen is slightly crooked.
After that, you will notice it every single day.

The Right Order Before You Drill
Start by choosing the general TV height and outlining the screen with painter’s tape.
Next, look at both sides of the wall. Check for bathrooms, sinks, laundry equipment, outlets, switches, and mechanical systems.
Scan for studs several times and mark both edges. Use the voltage tester around accessible electrical components and take any warning seriously.
If the readings are confusing or the location appears risky, inspect the cavity or call a professional.
Once the location is confirmed, measure the bracket, level it, and mark the holes. Follow the mount manufacturer’s installation instructions and use the correct hardware for your wall type.
Drill only as deep as needed, and never force the bit through unexpected resistance.
This is also a good example of why an FHA appraisal and a home inspection are not the same thing. Neither process can reveal every condition concealed inside every wall.
Even if the house was inspected before closing, you still need to check the specific area before drilling into it.
When to Stop and Call Someone
Stop if you cannot confidently identify the studs, if the scanner repeatedly warns of live wiring, if you hit a metal plate, or if plumbing may be present.
Professional installation may also make sense for very large televisions, heavy full-motion mounts, fireplace installations, unusual wall materials, or any project requiring new in-wall electrical work.
Brick, concrete, plaster, tile, and stone can all require different tools, anchors, and installation methods. Do not assume the hardware included with the mount is correct for every wall.
There is nothing wrong with doing the project yourself.
There is also nothing wrong with realizing that saving an installation fee is not worth risking a damaged TV, an electrical problem, or a pipe inside the wall.

The mistake is not mounting your own television.
The mistake is treating the wall like an empty sheet of drywall.
Use a reliable stud finder, check the electrical area, inspect questionable spaces, measure carefully, and level the bracket before drilling.
